In Belchertown, the Treasurer and Tax Collector positions have been combined into one position. The Tax Collector receives a tax figure from the Assessors. The already computed tax is transferred from the Assessors' warrant to the actual tax bill. The Collector is responsible for maintaining an accurate record of taxes owed the Town and for actively pursuing delinquent taxpayer accounts.
The primary responsibility of the Treasurer is to act as a custodian of public funds. The Treasurer receives, invests and takes charge of all Town monies, paying out funds according to the approved warrant. No other person may pay bills for any department. The authorizing officers are the Selectmen. The Treasurer is responsible for all loans and bond issues authorized by Town Meeting.
