The bond that exists between a human and their companion pet is very real, and often times, very emotionally intense. In the time that they spend as part of our lives, our pets become our buddies, pals, best friends, confidants, and family members. Regardless of what other people may tell you, or the “funny looks” you may get, the emotions you experience over the loss of your companion does create an unexplainable sense of loss, and you are subject to the same respect and healing process as anyone else.
In this time, others may tell you that it was “just a dog” or “just a cat”. There is no such thing as “just” a companion. Whether it was a guinea pig, bird, horse, rabbit, dog, cat, ferret, or any other animal that you were bonded to, is irrelevant; it was your friend, and now he/she is gone.
Sometimes we loose a beloved companion due to a sudden situation, medical condition, or unforeseen accident. Sometimes we are forced to make the difficult decision to allow them peace by euthanasia. The manner of death does not make your feelings of loss any different. You are mourning. Allow yourself to grieve; it’s ok, and it’s part of what makes you such a wonderful person that gives you the capacity to love these creatures for as much time as we are granted with them.
As a public safety department for Belchertown, we often times may be the ones you deal with if your companion was involved in an accident or other situation. Yes, we are officers of the Town. But we are also animal lovers and empathetic to your situation. Whether we have been there from the onset of your grieving process, or whether you need someone to reach out to, we are here to support you during this time of need.
