Acupuncture is a part of Oriental medicine (synonymous with traditional Chinese medicine) which originated many thousands of years ago in China. Acupuncture involves the insertion of hair thin, solid, single-use, sterile, stainless steel needles into certain points on the body. The insertion of the needle involves very little, if any pain and treatments are usually very relaxing. A patient sits or lays with the needles in for approximately 20-30 minutes. Other treatment methods that are part of Oriental medicine include: tuina (Chinese massage), cupping and guasha (scraping or suction techniques that increase circulation and can provide pain relief), moxibustion (heat therapy), diet and lifestyle counseling and traditional Chinese herbal therapy. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. The World Health Organization publishes a list of diseases and disorders that acupuncture has been shown to treat.
