Belchertown Fire Department Ice Alert.

Winter is starting to gain momentum and with it comes fresh ice to play on. The Fire Department would like to take a moment to remind you of the dangers of unsafe ice and cold water.

The first thing that happens when you fall into cold water is you begin to get hypothermic. This means your muscle function starts to diminish along with your mental capacity and ability to reason.  You may find you are unable to pull yourself to safety.

Ice thickness and strength will vary depending on conditions. New black ice is the stronger than older milky ice. Ice, closer to shore, near water currents or around obstructions, is weaker than the rest. It is early in the season, if you are unsure, stay off! You should always dress for the weather, and bring a friend better yet TWO!
